Sure, the holidays are cozy and warm and smell nice like those cinnamon pine cones I buy at Bed Bath and Beyond every year. Unfortunately, the holidays are not that way for everyone. There are overcrowded shelters in every city and those animals are not having such a jolly holiday season. If you have the means this holiday season, we encourage you to foster an animal from a shelter or rescue group and share your love with something greater than yourselves. This holiday season, open your heart and your home. Honestly, if you yourself are feeling lonesome during the holidays, what better company could you find than a furry ball of joy?
Petfinder.com has started a program called “Foster a Lonely Pet“, as they have compiled a list of shelters in rescue groups across the United States so anyone could contact an organization nearest you in order to foster a pet during this holiday season. You can even view a gallery of the pets in need of fostering. Petfinder.com really has a plethora of resources starting with the decision to become a foster-parent to preparing your home and other animals for a foster pet. They even touch on subjects such as how to handle health concerns that may arise while you are fostering.
I can tell you from my own experience, fostering a pet is extremely gratifying and knowing that you have given that animal a break from difficult conditions and opened your heart to loving it is special feeling. If you are the type that becomes attached easily, I do understand your hesitations. After all, eventually, I kept one of the dogs that I fostered. But, I did foster around 8 dogs before him. When you find one that just fits your lifestyle, you will just know.
